We arrived at the the Comfort Inn at Truth or Consequences about 1:00PM on September 22 to check in for our reservation. I approached the front desk and said, "Surely you must have a room ready by now. We need to check in and set up our computers." The check-in clerk, Larry, went ballistic. He shouted, "How dare you insult our hotel staff! You must apologize to our maids, or I will cancel your reservation." I tried to explain that all we asked for was a room. He kept up the antics. He fetched a maid with a broom and ordered me to apologize to her, which of course I didn't do. I just stood there and wondered what he would do next. He kept speechifying saying, "Believe me, you're not the only person who wants to stay here. They all have excuses. They're late to a wedding. They have to catch a plane. I don't want people like you to stay at my hotel." After listening to this sort of thing for about ten minutes, I asked for my money back. He at first refused to give it to me reminding me of the cancellation poilicy. But then he said, "I don't want you here." I got my money back and left. We drove to Las Cruces and checked into a La Quinta 70 more miles down the road instead. I've never experienced such a situation before.
I later complained to the manager of the property. I never received an answer.
Tip: On the way to Santa Fe we actually got to check in and stay here with our pets. But on the way back we had the unfortunate experience I describe above. I would recommend the ground floor. It's closer to the parking lot in case you must leave in a hurry the way we had to.
P.S. At least the town of Truth or Consequences, which used to be called Hot Springs, New Mexico, has a nice view of the Elephant Butte rock formation.
